Aiming to be the biggest pop star to ever come out of Australia, Mel Jade has armed herself with songs, passion and glitter and is ready to take on the world....

Q. When did you start singing?

A. Hmm..probably around the time I was born haha. I actually can't remember a time when I didn't want to be a singer. When people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, at first I answered 'Belle' from 'Beauty and the Beast', but when I realised that becoming a fictional cartoon character wasn't really a viable career option I set my sights on singing instead.

I never grew out of those dreams.

Q. What do you love about being a singer now?

A. I love how multifaceted this industry can be. One day I'm a singer recording songs or performing, the next I'm a writer creating lyrics, a film star doing a music video, a business woman planning my career, a supermodel doing a photoshoot...and sometimes a hobo who's just struggling to make it...haha.

I've always loved every part of being a singer though. When I was little I would plan my future music videos, make up dance routines and brainstorm crazy outfits that I would wear on stage.

Q. When did you write your first song?

A. I wrote my first song in the bath when I was three. It was called 'I never thought a seahorse could drown' and it was a very tragic song...haha. I've been writing songs ever since then. I play a bit of piano so I like experimenting with different chord progressions and melodies but lyrics are always my favourite part of a song to write. I love words.

Q. What inspires you?

A. I get inspired very easily so anything around me could be a trigger for a new song or a concept for a video or something.

In terms of what inspires me to keep pushing forward in this business...I have no idea! I have so much passion but I feel like the dream chose me rather than me choosing it.

Q. Who is your idol?

A. Barbie. She's been a rockstar, a firefighter, a doctor, a dolphin trainer and she's done it all in heels.

Q. What has been the highlight of your career so far?

A. There's been a few. I loved having a song chart in Europe! Some of the gigs I've done have been amazing too, performing in front of a crowd of thousands of people at this big party and opening a fashion runway show. I also starred in a TV show about the music industry which was fun!

Finally just writing songs and making music videos are highlights for me. But I hope to have many more sparkly moments in the future!

Q. What has been the lowlight of your career so far?

A. When I was 13 my friend and I entered the school talent quest. I was so excited, I produced a song on the computer, wrote all the lyrics, choreographed a dance routine and designed and sewed these awful sparkly blue costumes. On the night we were told there were no cordless microphones and so we decided not to use any because we needed to dance around the stage. No one could hear us and we came dead last. It was funny though. I don't plan on having any more lowlights haha.

Q. Describe yourself in three words?

A. 'Dreamer' because I'm very ambitious... even ridiculously ambitious. I'm always dreaming up crazy ideas. 'Sparkly' because I like to be extraordinary... and I like wearing glittery things. My last word is 'rockstar' because I don't live by the rulebook. I want to learn everything about everything then make up my own rules... Like that I can use rockstar as an adjective. See how rebellious I am haha.

Q. Describe your sound?

A. I like to call it smokin' rockstar POP with hints of electro haha. I always loved soulful blues vocalists but can't stop dancing to electro and house. I adore the glitter and commercial hooks of pop music but am also spellbound by the passion and attitude of rockstars. So I kind of mash everything I like together and emerge with my own brand of pop.

Q. What are your hopes for the future?

A. I'm shooting for the stars! World domination etc.
